Hardscapes, Patios & Retaining Walls Guide

What goes into a patio or wall that stays level for years, and how to tell a solid hardscape contractor from a shortcut.

A patio or fire pit changes how often you're outside. It gives you a dry, level place to sit, eat and gather, and it makes the backyard feel like part of the house.

What you can't see matters most. Georgia clay holds water and moves as it swells and dries, so a patio set on a thin layer of sand will sink and shift. A good contractor excavates, compacts a deep gravel base and sets edge restraints, so the pavers stay where they belong.

What it includes

  • Paver and natural stone patios
  • Walkways and garden paths
  • Fire pits and seating walls
  • Retaining walls for slopes and terraces
  • Steps and landings
  • Patio extensions and repairs
  • Landscape and path lighting
  • Drainage built into the project

How a typical project goes

Plan the space

The contractor measures, checks grades and drainage, and helps you pick a size and layout.

Choose materials

You see paver and stone samples and get a quote with materials and labor broken out.

Build the base

The area is excavated, gravel is laid and compacted in layers, and edging is set.

Finish

Pavers are laid, cut, filled with polymeric sand and cleaned. Sealing is often an option.

When to build a patio in Georgia

Hardscape work can happen most of the year. Spring and fall book up fastest, so planning a winter build is a smart way to have your patio ready by the first warm weekend.

Rain is the main delay. Soaked clay can't be compacted properly, and a good contractor waits for it to dry rather than build on a weak base.

Questions to ask a landscaper

  • How deep is your gravel base, and how do you compact it?
  • How will water drain off the patio?
  • Does this wall need an engineered design or permit?
  • What warranty comes with the work?

Common questions

Pavers or poured concrete?

Pavers cost a little more up front but handle soil movement better, since individual pieces flex instead of cracking. They're also easy to repair. Concrete fits budget projects and simple shapes.

Do retaining walls need a permit?

Many local codes require an engineered design and permit for walls over a certain height, often around four feet. Your contractor should know what applies.

How long does a patio take to build?

Most residential patios take three to seven working days once materials arrive, depending on size, access and weather.

Will weeds grow between pavers?

Polymeric sand hardens between the joints and blocks most weeds and ants. A light top-up every few years keeps it working.
